Assessing Student Learning
The goal of my project was to give students ownership over their own musicianship by means of recording a cover song. Due to the nature of this project, much of my assessment strategy revolved around informally assessing students and adjusting my lesson to their needs in real time. In addition, having only three students gave me ample opportunity to hear them as individuals and further adjust my instruction to their individual needs.
My expectations of the students were that they would be creating a cover song through decisions that revolved around them. In addition, they would be reaching this goal by means of “playing by ear” and learning in quite a different way than they normally would in their band classes. The nature of their personalities lends themselves to any type of challenge, which is quite visible in the video. As a result, I did not have a difficult time communicating my expectations, nor did they have a difficult time receiving them and completing the task at hand.
Students accomplished the objectives for the Series of Lessons by learning about topics such as transcribing, ear training, arranging, and recording. The lessons were designed intentionally to scaffold the students to the end goal, which they knew of the entire time. For example, in the first two days of lessons, students are working on transcribing, arranging, and recording Mary Had a Little Lamb. The goal was to have them feel a sense of accomplishment by working on such an easy and familiar tune. Later, they would take their knowledge and apply to a considerably more difficult tune, Feel it Still.
